The Mine Water Division of WISA was formed in the late 1980’s and focuses on mine water, including management, treatment, reuse, conservation and the impact on the mining and general environment. The MWD arranges one or two mine water symposia per annum that are well attended by mining companies, regulators, researchers, consultants and NGOs. The Management Committee of the MWD represents all the important role players and comprises representatives from consulting firms, mining companies, research organisations, the Chamber of Mines, Department of Water and Sanitation and water utilities. WISA is represented on the Board of Control of the Water Environment Federation (USA) and is a member of the American Waste Water Association. WISA is also directly represented on the National Committee of the International Water Association. WISA further has an agreement with the Australian Water Association and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Water Environmental Management in Britain.
